Countless icy fragments

Not a solid sheet — billions of individual particles, mostly water ice, ranging from dust grains to chunks the size of a house, each one independently orbiting Saturn under its own gravity.

Wide, but almost paper-thin

The main rings stretch about 280,000 km from inner to outer edge — nearly the distance from Earth to the Moon — yet in places they're as little as 10 metres thick.

Named in the order discovered, not position

The bright A and B rings were named first, then C; later, fainter rings (D, E, F, G) were slotted in around them. The Cassini Division — the dark gap between A and B — is itself nearly wide enough to fit Mars.

Fed and shaped by tiny moons

Some rings are actively fed: Enceladus's south-pole geysers spray icy particles that go on to form Saturn's faint, huge E ring. Small "shepherd" moons embedded in the rings keep their edges sharp with their gravity.

Where the rings came from is still debated — most likely the shattered remains of a moon or comet that strayed too close to Saturn and was torn apart by tidal forces before it could pull itself back together. Data from NASA's Cassini mission suggested the rings may be surprisingly young, perhaps only 100–400 million years old, far younger than Saturn itself — and they won't last forever: Saturn's gravity is slowly pulling ring material in as a fine rain of ice, a process that may empty the rings within another few hundred million years.
