What makes Io so extreme

Squeezed by three worlds at once

Io, Europa and Ganymede orbit Jupiter in an exact 4:2:1 resonance — every time Io completes four orbits, Europa completes two and Ganymede one. That locked rhythm keeps pulling Io's orbit slightly elliptical, and Jupiter's gravity flexes it hard on every pass.

Hundreds of active volcanoes

That flexing generates enough internal heat to keep Io's interior partly molten. Its volcanoes resurface the entire moon so fast that impact craters barely have time to form before lava or sulfur dioxide frost buries them.

No ice, unlike its neighbour

Io sits closest to Jupiter of the four big moons and is bone dry — any water baked off billions of years ago. Fly one moon further out and Europa, next door, is the opposite: an ice shell over a hidden ocean.

Sulfur paints the surface

Io's yellows, oranges and reds come from sulfur and sulfur dioxide erupted in different states and temperatures — Voyager scientists likened the first close-up images to a rotten orange or a pizza.

Voyager 1 discovered Io's volcanism by accident in 1979, when navigation engineer Linda Morabito spotted a plume rising off the moon's edge in a routine image — the first active volcano ever observed beyond Earth. Since then, Galileo and Juno have watched Io's surface visibly change between passes. It sits deep inside Jupiter's radiation belts, which is part of why so few missions have gone back for a close look; most of what reaches Io's surface, and much of what we know about it, has come from a handful of flybys decades apart.

Why is Io so volcanic?

Tidal heating. Io's orbit is locked in resonance with Europa and Ganymede, which keeps it slightly elliptical — Jupiter's gravity flexes Io on every orbit, and that flexing generates enough heat to keep its interior partly molten.

Does Io have any ice or water?

Essentially none. Unlike Europa or Enceladus, Io is bone dry — any water or ice was driven off long ago, leaving a surface of solidified lava and sulfur compounds instead.

Can spacecraft survive near Io?

Not for long. Io orbits deep inside Jupiter's intense radiation belts, which is a major reason missions have only flown past rather than orbiting it directly.
