The Icy Moons: Hidden Oceans Beyond Earth
Out past the frost line, sunlight is too weak to keep anything liquid — and yet several of the outer moons hide oceans of liquid water under a shell of ice. AstroSat's 3D view shows exactly where they orbit, and what squeezes them warm.
Three worlds, three flavours of ice
Europa
Jupiter's smallest Galilean moon hides a global ocean beneath its ice — likely twice the water of every ocean on Earth combined. NASA's Europa Clipper, launched in October 2024, is on its way to study it up close.
Enceladus
A moon barely 500 km across, actively spraying its ocean into space: geysers at its south pole shoot water and ice grains that feed Saturn's faint E ring — the only icy moon we've directly sampled from orbit.
Titan
Saturn's largest moon has a thick atmosphere, rivers and lakes of liquid methane on its surface — and growing evidence of a deep, salty water ocean underneath all of that, sealed beneath the ice.
Why ice hides warmth
None of these moons get meaningful heat from the Sun this far out. What keeps their interiors liquid is tidal heating — the same gravitational flexing, from Jupiter or Saturn and their other moons, that keeps Io's volcanoes erupting.
These moons stay warm through tidal heating rather than sunlight: as each one follows a slightly elliptical orbit locked in resonance with its neighbours, the giant planet's gravity flexes it a little on every pass, and that flexing generates heat deep inside — the same mechanism that makes Io the most volcanic place in the solar system, just tuned to melt ice instead of rock. It's why the search for life beyond Earth increasingly points not at another planet, but at the moons orbiting the gas giants.
Frequently asked questions
Which moons have liquid water oceans?
Europa and Enceladus have the strongest evidence — both show signs of a global subsurface ocean. Titan and Ganymede are also thought to hide deep oceans under thicker layers of ice.
Could there be life in these oceans?
Nobody knows yet, but they meet the basic requirements astrobiologists look for: liquid water, energy (from tidal heating) and, on Enceladus at least, direct evidence of chemistry from hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor.
How do we know there's an ocean if we can't see it?
Mostly from gravity and magnetic-field measurements as spacecraft fly past — a rigid ice shell and a liquid layer tug on a probe differently. Enceladus is the exception: its geysers let Cassini fly straight through ocean spray and sample it directly.
What is tidal heating?
The repeated flexing a moon feels from its planet's gravity as it moves along an elliptical orbit. That flexing generates internal friction and heat — enough, on these worlds, to keep an entire ocean from freezing solid.
